Allemand Ninja Gaiden beginnt mit einer filmischen Animation, in der sich 2 Ninjas bis zum Tod duellieren; einer geht zu Boden. Es wird enthüllt, dass der dem Untergang geweihte Ninja der Vater von Ryu Hayabusa ist. Als Ryu davon erfährt, begibt er sich auf die Suche, um herauszufinden, wer seinen Vater getötet hat und warum. Diese Suche führt ihn nach Amerika, um einen Archäologen zu finden, mit dem Ryus Vater zusammengearbeitet hat. Anglais Ninja Gaiden begins with a cinematic animation in which 2 ninjas duel to the death; one goes down. It is revealed that the doomed ninja is the father of Ryu Hayabusa. When Ryu learns of this, he embarks on a quest to find out who killed his father and why. This quest takes him to America to find an archaeologist with whom Ryu's father was working. From there, Ryu becomes embroiled in an evil, supernatural conspiracy involving a villain named Jaquio who has plans to use an ancient castle and some relics to unleash a terrifying evil upon the world.

Ninja Gaiden is a side scrolling game where Ryu the ninja can run, jump, and slash with his ninja sword. He can also attach to any vertical surface. Powerups are littered throughout the landscape that allow Ryu to toss fireballs and ninja stars, and perform other feats.

Ryu Hayabusa est le dernier héritier du clan Ninja Dragon. Armé de l'ancestrale épée Dragon du clan, il part aux Etats-Unis enquêter et venger la mort de son père Ken Hayabusa. La mort de ce dernier est liée au secret des deux statuettes démoniaques des ténèbres et de la lumière que Shinobi utilisa pour enfermer le démon.
Traqué par la CIA, leur agent Irene Lew et leur chef Forster, Ryu va être dirigé vers les confins de l'Amazonie par l'archéologue Walter Smith. Walter Smith y a découvert les ruines d'un temple vieux de plus de 2000 ans censé être la prison du démon et qui est désormais accaparé par un dénommé Guardia de Mieux alias "The Jaquio" qui s'est approprié une des statuettes démoniaques..

nnNinja Gaiden è un gioco a scorrimento laterale in cui Ryu il ninja può correre, saltare e colpire con la sua spada ninja. Può anche attaccarsi a qualsiasi superficie verticale.
