Allemand Star Wars: Dark Forces (dt. Dunkle Mächte) ist der erste kommerziell entwickelte First-Person-Shooter, der im Star-Wars-Universum angesiedelt ist. LucasArts entwickelte und veröffentlichte das Spiel im Jahr 1995.
Die Hauptfigur ist der Söldner Kyle Katarn, ein ehemaliger Offizier des Galaktischen Imperiums, der sich der Rebellen-Allianz anschloss, da imperiale Soldaten seine Familie töteten.

Das Spiel wurde handlungstechnisch 1997 mit Star Wars: Jedi Knight fortgesetzt. Damit ist Dark Forces der erste Teil der Jedi Knight-Reihe.

Dark Forces ist ein Shooter, der aus der Ego-Perspektive gespielt wird. Der Spieler steuert die Spielfigur Kyle Katarn durch vielfältige Umgebungen. In diesen trifft er auf zahlreiche Gegner, die den Spieler bei Sichtkontakt angreifen. In Kampfsequenzen stehen dem Spieler seine Fäuste, Landminen, Granaten, Pistolen und Gewehre zur Verfügung. Die meisten Kämpfe sind Distanzkämpfe. Für seine Waffen benötigt der Spieler Munition. Diese sind ähnlich wie die Boni in den Leveln verteilt und können aufgesammelt werden.

Den Kern des Spiels stellt die linear aufgebaute Kampagne dar. In den einzelnen Leveln kann der Spieler diverse Boni aufsammeln, die seine Rüstung und seine Waffen aufwerten. Von gefallenen Gegnern kann er die Waffen aufnehmen.

Anglais Kyle Katarn is a former Imperial officer turned mercenary, now hired by the Rebel Alliance. After having stolen the Death Star plans from a remote facility, he is tasked with investigating the sudden destruction of a hidden Rebel base. This leads him to face off against Imperial General Rom Mohc and the various iterations of his "Dark Troopers" - cybernetic soldiers with the armor and firepower to turn the tide of the war.

Dark Forces is a close prequel to the original Star Wars movie trilogy. The game marks LucasArts' first attempt to enter the first-person shooter market. Instead of licensing the Doom engine, like many competitors, LucasArts created its own internal "Jedi" engine. The Jedi engine contains advanced features over similar tech, including the ability to look up and down, jump, crouch, and limited support (in the build used for Dark Forces) for rooms (sectors) over rooms. 3D models also make occasional appearances inside the game, as turrets or Kyle's ship dropping him off or picking him up from each mission.

Espagnol Star Wars: Dark Forces fue el primer FPS basado en el universo de Star Wars y uno de los primeros videojuegos en comercializarse en formato CD-ROM, debido a su considerable tamaño para la época (debido en su mayor parte a las secuencias de vídeo que incorporaba).
El protagonista del videojuego es un mercenario llamado Kyle Katarn, que trabaja para la Alianza Rebelde. En la primera misión ha de robar los planos de la Estrella de la Muerte, pero más adelante el hilo argumental se desvía de las películas, llevando al protagonista a enfrentarse con las misteriosas Dark Forces del Imperio Galáctico.

Las secuelas de la saga Dark Forces llevan al protagonista a convertirse en un Caballero Jedi.

Français Star Wars : Dark Forces, FPS sur Playstation, met en scène le personnage de Kyle Katarn dans une aventure se déroulant peu avant l'Episode IV de Star Wars. Le joueur peut d'ailleurs participer au vol des schémas de la première Etoile Noire avant de déjouer les plans de l'Empire projetant la création de super soldats, les Dark Troopers. Le jeu est à l'origine de la série des Jedi Knight dont Kyle Katarn est également le héros.
