Allemand Tausende von Jahren vor dem Beginn des ersten Spiels versuchte Shinnok, einer der älteren Götter, die die sechs Reiche im Universum von Mortal Kombat kontrollieren, der Eroberer von allen zu werden. Donnergott Raiden kämpfte und besiegte Shinnok in einem Hunderte Jahre andauernden Krieg und schickte ihn in die Unterwelt, wo er für immer gefangen sein würde. Nun ist es Shinnok gelungen, mit Hilfe des Zauberers Quan Chi aus der Netherealm zu fliehen und Rache an den Göttern zu suchen, die ihn vertrieben haben. In seinem Plan erobert er zuerst mit Hilfe der Verräterin Tanya das Reich Edenia, während er sich darauf vorbereitet die Alten Götter anzugreifen. Um Shinnoks Bedrohung zu stoppen, bittet Raiden um Hilfe von den Earthrealm-Kriegern, die in vorherigen Titeln die Reiche vor Kaiser Shao Kahn retteten.

Français Mortal Kombat 4 est le dernier opus de la série sorti sur N64. C'est le premier épisode à ne pas utiliser des images 2D numérisées mais plutôt des personnages modélisés en 3 dimensions. Les développeurs conservent toutefois le gameplay 2D. L'expérience est donc presque identique aux précédentes versions à l'opposé des jeux de combat du moment intégralement en 3D.
