NFS Underground 2 spielt in einer riesigen, offenen Stadt, die die Spieler nach Belieben erkunden können, um sich mit zufälligen Herausforderern zu messen und in die begehrte Underground Racing League aufzusteigen. Sobald der Spieler in der Underground Racing League ist, kommt er zunächst durch Rennsiege voran, dann durch den Ausbau seines Tuning-Autos und durch die Herausforderung stärkerer Gegner. Anglais This installment in the Need for Speed series, Underground 2 is a racing game based on illicit, night time races, with the player gaining street credit, cash and access to unique tuner parts by schooling the competition.

Taking place in a massive, open city, NFS Underground 2 allows players to explore the city at will, engaging random challengers and moving into the coveted Underground Racing League. Once in the Underground Racing League, the player advances first by race wins, then with building up their tuner car and taking on tougher opponents. The objective is to win all Underground Racing League engagements and trick out your car to the max.

The PC version is the only version that allows the user to save magazine screen shots of your tricked out car to disk.
Espagnol NFS Underground 2, que se desarrolla en una enorme ciudad abierta, permite a los jugadores explorar la ciudad a su antojo, enfrentándose a retadores aleatorios y pasando a la codiciada Liga de Carreras Subterráneas. Una vez en la Liga de Carreras Subterráneas, el jugador avanza primero por las carreras ganadas, luego por la construcción de su auto sintonizador y enfrentándose a oponentes más duros. Una volta nella Underground Racing League, il giocatore progredisce prima con le vittorie nelle corse, poi costruendo la propria auto e affrontando avversari più difficili. L'obiettivo è vincere tutti gli eventi della Underground Racing League e personalizzare al massimo la propria auto.

La versione per PC è l'unica che consente all'utente di salvare screenshot delle proprie auto personalizzate su disco.
