Allemand Die Vorgeschichte, welche durch gezeichnete Einzelbilder erzählt wird, versetzt den Spieler in eine lebensfeindliche, dystopische Zukunft Australiens. Der Protagonist Robert Foster, als kleiner Junge der einzige Überlebende eines Helikopter-Absturzes, wird von einer Gruppe australischer Ureinwohner aufgenommen. Diese lehren ihn das Überleben im "Gap" (eine im Spiel verwendete Bezeichnung für das Outback), aber auch Technik und Kenntnisse eines Ingenieurs, mit deren Hilfe er sich "Joey" konstruiert, seinen sprechenden Roboter-Freund. Noch vor dem Start des eigentlichen Spielgeschehens wird Fosters neue Heimat jedoch durch ein Militärkommando angegriffen und dem Erdboden gleichgemacht; Foster selbst wird in die Stadt Union City verschleppt.

Anglais Beneath A Steel Sky (BASS) is set in a post-apocalyptic Australia where you're an orphan living with a tribe in the wastelands the 'gap' when a helicopter comes to take you to the enormous Union City. The game starts with the helicopter crashing down in the city and you making your escape into one of the large tall plants. Your goal? To discover who you really are and why you were taken to the city.

Espagnol En Beneath a Steel Sky se narra la historia de un joven llamado Robert, que es el único superviviente de un accidente de helicóptero. Robert es adoptado por un grupo local de aborígenes australianos, que le enseñan las habilidades que necesita para sobrevivir en este nuevo duro entorno; el protagonista pasa a llamarse Robert Foster por el descubrimiento de una lata vacía de cerveza dorada de Foster's Lager, una cerveza australiana, que se encuentra cerca del lugar del accidente.
