Anglais Five Hundred years ago, an ancient and well respected Shaolin fighting tournament, held every 50 years, was corrupted by an evil and elderly sorcerer by the name of Shang Tsung. Shang was accompanied by Prince Goro, a warrior of the Shokan race (a four armed half-human/half-dragon). Knowing that if ten tournaments in a row were won by the Outworld champion, the Earth Realm would be conquered by evil and fall into darkness, Shang entered Goro in the tournament and had him defeat the great Kung Lao. Goro has been reigning supreme as the undefeated fighting champion for five hundred years now. As the last tournament required draws near, Raiden, Thunder God and protector of the Earth Realm, enacts a plan to tip the scales in the humans favor, Seven fighters step into the arena on Shang Tsung's mysterious island: Shaolin warrior Liu Kang, Special Forces operative Sonya Blade, the mercenary thug Kano, fame-seeking actor Johnny Cage, the ice wielding Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and his undead adversary Scorpion, and Raiden himself.Mortal Kombat is a side-scrolling 1 on 1 fighting game. Fighting is set as one on one kombat, allowing each player to perform a variety of punches, kicks, and special moves in order to defeat their opponent. When the opponent faces their second round loss, the winner can perform a finishing move called a ''Fatality'' on the loser. The Fatality is a move unique to each fighter that graphically kills the loser in a blood-soaked finale.Mortal Kombat began its life as a 2-player arcade title. It is notable for its use of digitized actors to represent the game's fighters, as well as its use of copious amounts of blood during gameplay.

Français Il y a 500 ans, le tournoi annuel des Shaolins, désireux de représenter le tournoi de combat le plus prestigieux dans le monde, a été interrompu par un vieux sorcier et une créature étrange dotée de quatre bras qui est entrée dans le tournoi et a vaincu le grand Kung Lao. Ce guerrier shokan était moitié-humain, moitié-dragon. Appelé Goro, il est devenu le champion et l'est resté durant les cinq siècles suivants. C'était le plan de Shang Tsung pour briser l'équilibre entre le bien et le mal et plonger le monde dans le chaos pour aider le royaume d'Outre-Monde à conquérir celui de la Terre.
Liu Kang a été choisi pour représenter l'ordre shaolin dans le tournoi avec l'intention de rétablir l'équilibre. Un célèbre acteur fan d'arts martiaux, Johnny Cage, s'est également présenté au tournoi et s'est attiré la sympathie de Liu Kang lorsqu'un combat a éclaté entre lui-même et Kano. Le guerrier de Lin Kuei, Sub-Zero a été invité à rejoindre le tournoi par le dieu du tonnerre Raiden lui-même. Le spectre ninja Scorpion a lui aussi pris part au tournoi, avec comme intention de tuer Sub-Zero, pensant que ce dernier était responsable de sa propre mort. Kano, le gangster le plus diabolique de l'ordre du Dragon noir était pourchassé par une unité de forces spéciales des États-Unis, menée par le lieutenant Sonya Blade, quand il est parvenu à monter dans un bateau menant au tournoi ; son but dans ce dernier était de piller le palais de Shang Tsung, où la rumeur raconte que les murs sont faits d'or. Une fois Sonya et ses hommes arrivés, Shang Tsung les a attirés dans un guet-apens établi par son armée personnelle. L'unité de forces spéciales s'est faite emprisonner, et Sonya n'a eu d'autre choix que de participer au tournoi afin de sauver son équipe. Ainsi le tournoi a eu lieu.

Italien Cinquecento anni fa, un antico e rispettato torneo di combattimento Shaolin, tenuto ogni 50 anni, fu corrotto da uno stregone malvagio e anziano di nome Shang Tsung. Shang era accompagnato dal principe Goro, un guerriero della razza Shokan (un mezzo umano / mezzo drago a quattro braccia). Sapendo che se dieci tornei di fila fossero stati vinti dal campione Outworld, il Regno della Terra sarebbe stato conquistato dal male e sarebbe caduto nell'oscurità, Shang entrò nel torneo di Goro e lo fece sconfiggere il grande Kung Lao. Goro regna supremo come campione di combattimento imbattuto da cinquecento anni.
