Allemand A.D. 2009: Die menschliche Rasse befindet sich mitten in einem Drei-Band-Krieg mit einer Rasse von riesigen humanoiden Außerirdischen, die in Zentrans und Meltlans geteilt sind. Nachdem er einen doppelten Raum ausgeführt hat, der ihn und einen Teil von South Ataria Island bis zum Rand des Sonnensystems geschickt hat, ist die Weltraumfestung Macross auf dem Weg zurück zur Erde. Während eines kleinen Scharmützels mit Zentradis Kräften rettet der junge Pilot Hikaru Ichijyo die Idol-Sängerin Lynn Minmay und ihre Beziehung entfaltet sich, als sie irgendwo innerhalb des Schiffes gestrandet sind. Doch kurz nach der Rückkehr nach Macross City wird Minmay von den Zentradi gefangen genommen, und Hikaru und die Offizierin Misa Hayase landen auf der Erde, nur um die Folgen der Zerstörung ihrer Zivilisation zu sehen. Nur ein Lied, das vor Äonen entdeckt wurde, zusammen mit Minmays Stimme, kann das Ergebnis des Krieges bestimmen.

Anglais The legend of the Valkyrie pilots is not yet over. Hikaru, Max, and Millia take flight to defend the earth from Zentraedi, robots, more robots, and giant space crab-bees. Now is the time to scramble Valkyrie again.

When starting a game or continuing the player picks from either Hikaru, Max, or Millia. Each flies a custom Valkyrie with its own set weapon load-out. A Valkyrie changes its weapon and movement speed by switching between its three forms: Fighter, Gerwalk, and Battroid. Typically the Valkyrie weapon shoots straight and quickly, the Gerwalk weapon shoots around or through obstacles, and the Battroid weapon does higher damage in exchange for reduced firing rate. Each weapon can be upgraded up to twice by picking up power up items dropped by special enemy ships, but one level of power up will be lost any time the Valkyrie is shot. If a Valkyrie's entire life bar is depleted then the full stage must be repeated, provided the player still has enough continues.

In a nod to Galaga the player is able to capture some enemy craft to increase their firepower. If the player does not shoot any weapons for a few seconds a field of electricity will cover the Valkyrie. Touching some enemy ships will then cause their targeting to be shorted out and make them friendly to the player, following along and shooting or ramming onscreen enemies.

Después de ejecutar un espacio doble que lo envió y parte de South Ataria Island hasta el borde del Sistema Solar, la fortaleza espacial Macross está en camino de regreso a la Tierra. Durante una pequeña escaramuza con las fuerzas de Zentradi, el joven piloto Hikaru Ichijyo rescata a la cantante de ídolos Lynn Minmay y su relación se desarrolla cuando están varados en algún lugar dentro de la nave. Pero poco después de regresar a Macross City, Minmay es capturado por el Zentradi, y Hikaru y la oficial Misa Hayase terminan en la Tierra, solo para ver las consecuencias de la destrucción de su civilización. Italien ANNO DOMINI. 2009: La razza umana si trova nel mezzo di una guerra a tre con una razza di giganteschi alieni umanoidi divisi in Zentrans e Meltlan. Dopo aver percorso un doppio spazio che lo ha mandato via e parte dell'isola di South Ataria al confine del Sistema Solare, la fortezza spaziale di Macross sta tornando sulla Terra. Durante una piccola scaramuccia con le forze Zentradi, il giovane pilota Hikaru Ichijyo salva la cantante idol Lynn Minmay e la loro relazione si sviluppa quando sono bloccati da qualche parte all'interno della nave. Ma poco dopo essere tornato a Macross City, Minmay viene catturato dallo Zentradi e Hikaru e l'agente Misa Hayase finiscono sulla Terra, solo per vedere le conseguenze della distruzione della loro civiltà. Solo una canzone scoperta eoni fa, insieme alla voce di Minmay, può determinare l'esito della guerra.

Mas logo após retornar a Macross City, Minmay é capturado pelos Zentradi, e Hikaru e a oficial Misa Hayase acabam na Terra, apenas para ver as consequências da destruição de sua civilização. Apenas uma canção descoberta há milhares de anos, juntamente com a voz de Minmay, pode determinar o resultado da guerra.
